Prince Philip Lauds Michael Werikhe's Walk to Save the Rhino: Michael Werikhe, also known as the "Rhino Man," has returned from the UK after completing a walk across Europe to raise awareness and funds for rhino conservation. His walk was supported by organizations like the East African Wildlife Society, World Wildlife Fund (WWF), and various animal protection groups. Prince Philip praised Werikhe’s efforts in a personal letter, calling his walk an inspiring gesture. Werikhe’s journey, which took him through Italy, Switzerland, and other parts of Europe, drew attention to the plight of rhinos in Africa. Another Airline for East Africa: Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia Plan Joint Airline: Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia are considering forming a joint airline, with the first flight projected for April 1989. Transport ministers from the three countries are set to meet in Lusaka, Zambia, to discuss the logistics. The airline would operate services between Lusaka, Entebbe, Dar es Salaam, and Dubai, with connections to London, Frankfurt, and North America. The venture would involve shared use of Zambia Airways’ wide-bodied DC10-30 aircraft. The plan is seen as an effort to replace the regional services lost after the collapse of East African Airways. Top GCE Candidates from Coast Academy: Two students from Coast Academy, Punita Patel and Bijal Shah, have excelled in their London GCE Art exams. Mrs. Piele, their art teacher, commended their talent and predicted even higher achievements in the future. Both students will sit for their final exams in June 1989. Lions Club Hosts ‘Gala’ Sports Meet for Disabled: The Lions Club of Mombasa is organizing a special sports meet for disabled individuals on October 9 at the Municipal Stadium. Several schools have confirmed their participation, and gifts will be distributed to attendees. The Mayor of Mombasa has been invited to the event. Elephants Entertain Guests at Shimba Lodge: Guests at Shimba Lodge were treated to a memorable experience when a group of elephants spent hours wallowing in a dam near the lodge. The elephants, including a young bull, captivated visitors, returning multiple times during the day and night to the delight of the onlookers.
