Elephants Fitted with Satellite Collars in Amboseli: The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has fitted two elephants in the Amboseli ecosystem with satellite tracking collars. These collars use GPS technology to monitor the elephants' migratory routes and movements, providing crucial data on their search for water and vegetation. The project, conducted in collaboration with the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), aims to enhance understanding of elephant behavior and improve conservation efforts. The data gathered has already shown that elephants traverse large areas, including movements across the Kenya-Tanzania border, and can help mitigate human-wildlife conflicts. Speeding Truck Hits and Kills Elephant on Mombasa-Nairobi Highway: A speeding truck collided with and killed an elephant on the Mombasa-Nairobi Highway. The Kenya Wildlife Service reported the incident, noting that the truck hit the elephant while traveling near Mombasa. The remains of the elephant have been removed from the road, and the tusks have been seized by KWS. Investigations are ongoing, and efforts are being made to prevent similar incidents in the future. |
