Seat Belts Save Eyes: A study from Germany revealed that eye injuries in car accidents have decreased significantly since seat belt usage became mandatory. The research, conducted in cities like Cologne, Hamburg, and Munich, showed over a 90% reduction in eye-related injuries due to the use of seat belts, emphasizing their importance in road safety. Kipevu Expands Petroleum Storage Facility: A new oil storage facility, costing Kshs. 560 million and funded by a Canadian loan, has been completed at Kipevu in Mombasa. The facility includes large oil storage tanks, each with a capacity of up to 330,000 barrels, bringing Kenya’s total storage capacity to 1.49 million barrels. Kenya Airways Airbus-310 for May Delivery: Kenya Airways is set to receive its first Airbus-310 aircraft from a European manufacturer in May. This long-haul plane is expected to enhance the airline's operations, especially in international routes such as London. Firestone 'Coast 600' Rally: The Firestone-sponsored 'Coast 600' rally will begin from Taita Hills Lodge on Saturday, January 25. The rally will traverse several regions, including Wundanyi, Mwatate, and Voi, before heading to Mariakani and Kinango. The event is known for its challenging terrain, including sisal plantations and steep hills. The rally has been sponsored by Firestone for many years, and the prize-giving ceremony is scheduled for 11:00 PM after the race – Coastdrive with Patrick Obath. New Funds for Oil Exploration: An Italian oil company, Pan Ocean, is set to invest 180 million dollars in Kenya's oil exploration in the northern region. Disabled School Expands in Mombasa: A new secondary school for the physically disabled in Mombasa has expanded its facilities, including a metal workshop and laboratory. The school, which is expected to accommodate 160 students, received financial support from Brooke Bond and the Mombasa Round Table. The official opening was performed by Mr. D.C. Besley, and a cheque worth Ksh 200,000 was presented on behalf of Brooke Bond to further the school's development. Scholarships for Nursery School Children Needed: Officials at the Wa Salama Nursery School in Mombasa are appealing for scholarships to help stranded students. Muslims Mourn Coast Scholar: The Muslim community is mourning the loss of a prominent scholar, Sheikh Nabe. Known for his dedication to Islamic theology and his deep knowledge of the Hadith (Sayings of the Prophet), Sheikh Nabe was revered for his intellectual ability to adapt tradition to the modern world. His efforts in helping people perform the Hajj were widely recognized, and his legacy is sure to live on through his students. April Launch for 'Malindi Rocket': Preparations are underway for another space satellite launch from the San Marco off-shore satellite platform near Malindi. The launch, scheduled for April, will send a satellite into orbit to study the Earth's atmosphere and space phenomena. The last satellite launched from this site was in 1980, during the solar eclipse, which created a shadow from Taveta to Lamu. This project is a collaboration between Italy and Kenya, and its success is eagerly anticipated – by Gray Phombeah.
